The melodrama! I had to get it out of my system.
"But shouldn't you just do it for the love of it??" is not an efficient model.
An artist creates something for the love of it and shares it after having calculated the cost-benefit analysis of being seen creating. The reward is in the making. Unfortunately, oftentimes the cost of creation comes with a need to share if any further creating is to be feasible.
Oftentimes, the cost of sharing is more than the return from having shared it. Especially music.
A professional can fund their own participation in an industry through employment that covers their living expenses and the costs of contributing to that industry. (A pilot pays to learn how to fly, and then is paid to fly, and cover his mortgage, bills, training loan etc.)
The word "amateur" literally comes from the latin word "to love" and can be defined as "the lover" of some pastime that does not generate income.
